H.S.C Reading Passage-3

                                                       Unit-1, Lesson-3
In the past, the common (communal, conjoint , mutual  )form of marriage among the various cultural groups(clusters, clutches, assemblies   ) in Kenya was polygamy (bigamy, ) and the polygamous families (clans, kinfolks  ) were embedded (inserted, entrenched  ) in extended (stretched ,protracted  ) family units consisting(entailing, residing ) of a man, his several wives and their married sons and children. But in line with the modern(current) world, things are now changing (fluctuating, varying, mutable ) there. The old custom(ritual, norm) of polygamous marriage is yielding (elastic, springy, squashy  ) to the new practice of monogamy, although many polygamous families can still be found in the rural areas of Kenya. Many monogamous Kenyans are now living (incarnate, corporeal ,) in nuclear families with their single spouses and their children. Many of them have given up their pastoral (rustic, countrified  ) lives and have become wage (stipend, remuneration  )earners in cities. But they can hardly give up their extended family and lineage connections back in their village. Some families have to maintain (sustain, conserve,   ) two households, one in their extended-family home in the village and the other in the city. This often poses a dilemma (quandary, impasse  ) for them.
